Review

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Big B swept the Indian box-office like a hurricane. A number of intense and action roles later, the Big B attained the tag of an 'angry young man'. Times changed, family dramas and love stories took precedence� Action took a backseat and so did Bachchan's angry man roles.

Post MOHABBATEIN, Bachchan acted in films that were a far cry from the action-filled masala fares he lent his name to in his prime. However, his current outing, Apoorva Lakhia's EK AJNABEE, sees the actor donning the garb that fitted him so beautifully at a point of time. EK AJNABEE works for this very reason!

Although the film has its share of deficiencies -- it loses balance in the post-interval portions -- it appeals primarily because Bachchan gets our juices running. Besides, Lakhia and his team of writers have juxtaposed drama and bloodbath in an enterprise that grips you completely in the first hour, but the hold loosens [slightly] in the subsequent hour.

The script isn't faulty as such, but the film veers into clich�-ridden situations after its exciting midpoint kidnapping. The twists and turns in the second half do catch you by surprise, but the execution of those sequences is so Hollywood-like that the Indian moviegoer wouldn't find them as impactful. Also -- this is important -- Lakhia seems to have concentrated more on frames and visuals that it often overpowers the material.

Yet, all said and done, EK AJNABEE isn't path-breaking in any respect, but the magic weaved by Bachchan camouflages the defects to a great extent. The film only confirms, yet again, that Big B's charismatic and mesmeric presence alone is worth the price of the ticket.

Suryaveer Singh [Amitabh Bachchan] was a former commando in the army. Fighting many a battle had taken a toll, so he decides to quit and seeks refuge in drinking.

Shekhar [Arjun Rampal], who used to work with him, invites Suryaveer to Bangkok where he owns a security firm. In order to get his life back in order, Shekhar gives Suryaveer a job as a bodyguard.

Suryaveer accepts it, only to find out that it is to protect an 8-year-old girl Anamika [Baby Rucha Vaidya], the only daughter of a tycoon couple [Vikram Chatwal, Perizaad Zorabian]. Somehow, slowly and steadily, Suryaveer forms a bond with her as she gives his life a new meaning.

But his life takes a traumatic turn when Anamika is kidnapped and shot dead subsequently by the chief kidnapper [Raj Zutshi]. A heartbroken Suryaveer swears revenge and starts zeroing on the kidnappers. But what unravels takes him by surprise...

EK AJNABEE seeks its basic inspiration from the Hollywood film MAN ON FIRE [2004; Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning], but director Apoorva Lakhia has Indianized the plot in such a manner that the basic plot is very identifiable. If APAHARAN [released last week] looked at kidnappings from a small-town issue, in EK AJNABEE it's very urban and those living in metropolis would identify with the goings-on. However, the kidnapping in EK AJNABEE is just a crucial point, for the film turns into a revenge fare before the intermission itself.

The first half is well built and the bonding between Bachchan and Rucha is amongst the most watchable aspects of the enterprise. Lakhia treats those sequences delicately and the impact that the sequences create establish a strong ground for the drama that is to follow. The sequence between Bachchan and Perizaad, when the latter walks out in a huff, or the one on the dinner table when Rucha enquires, amongst other things, about the P.M. of India, or the swimming sessions lift the film to an all-time high.

The kidnap sequence is brilliantly executed as well, it leaves you spellbound. Even the subsequent portions -- when the family is completely distraught -- only add to the impact of a razor-sharp first hour. So far, so good!

But the pace slackens considerably in the post-interval portions. Bachchan's decision to pick up leads to get to the rock-bottom of the issue could've been explained in a simplistic manner. Starting with Denzil Smith to Aditya Lakhia to Akhilendra Mishra to Yuth [the Thai actor who plays the role of Chang] to the 'Boss' [Raj Zutshi], the sequence of events that lead to the chase isn't riveting enough from the writing point of view.

Even when another face is unmasked in the climax [the suspense is withheld for readers!] -- the main conspirator -- it does catch you by surprise, but one only wishes that the explanations were done far more convincingly.

When compared to his directorial debut MUMBAI SE AAYA MERA DOST, Apoorva Lakhia takes giant strides as a storyteller. But he is letdown, to an extent, by the writing [in the post-interval portions], which could've been tighter. Technically speaking, EK AJNABEE is one of the most stylish products witnessed in 2005.

The film boasts of just two songs -- 'Tere Liye' [rendered brilliantly by Kunal Ganjawala] and 'Ek Ajnabee, Mama Told Me' -- and both come at the right places, thereby enhancing the impact. In fact, the placement of 'Tere Liye' at several points of the story is just perfect. The Sanjay Dutt track, placed at the end titles, is very MTVish, in terms of composition, rendition and picturization.

Cinematography is fantastic. The lensman doesn't cover the scenic beauty of Bangkok as much as the other side that the city has to offer. Dialogues are well worded at places. The stunts, in minimal doses, are very realistic.

To state that Bachchan is the lifeline of EK AJNABEE would be putting it mildly. The actor has portrayed a wide variety of roles in his illustrious career and every time you saunter in a movieplex to watch a Big B flick, you actually wonder, what will the actor offer next? But like a true magician, who has mastered the tricks of the trade effortlessly, Bachchan gives every role that extra sheen that only powerhouse performers can justify. Undeniably, EK AJNABEE is another 'medal' on his 'uniform'!

Arjun Rampal's role doesn't have much meat, but the actor doesn't seem overawed by the veteran's towering presence. He holds on his own, although one sincerely hoped that the writer wouldn't have relegated Arjun to the backseat.

Perizaad Zorabian is excellent. The actor finally gets an opportunity to be a part of a commercial set up and the work output is topnotch. Her confrontation with Bachchan initially, later when she learns that her daughter has been shot dead and much later, with her husband Vikram Chatwal, proves that she understands the grammar of acting right.

Baby Rucha is simply adorable. It wouldn't be wrong to state that the young actor matches up to Bachchan in every sequence, contributing enormously to the first half. Vikram Chatwal is strictly okay. Yuth is passable. Amongst character actors, Raj Zutshi, Kelly Dorji and Akhilendra Mishra stand out.

Both Abhishek Bachchan and Lara Dutta appear in the last sequence; Bachchan Jr. is now the bodyguard to a grown up Anamika [Lara Dutta]. Both add star value to the film.

On the whole, EK AJNABEE has a great first hour, but only a decent second. Yet, despite the oddities, it qualifies as a watchable fare. At the box-office, there are several factors going in its favor, but most importantly, it's the million dollar worth free publicity this film has attracted after Big B fell ill. With tremendous anxiety on one hand and Bachchan's sterling performance on the other, EK AJNABEE should prove a welcome visitor for its distributors.

Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena is a Hindi film partially inspired by the 2003 Hollywood movie Confidence.

Plot

Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena focuses on the duo of Arjun (Fardeen Khan) and his best friend Rohit (Rohit Roy) who con people for a living.

During their latest of escapades, both the duo manages to con the rich accountant of a don by the name of Sikander (Gulshan Grover), resulting in them stealing millions of rupees. Soon after, Rohit (Rohit Roy) is killed by Sikander's men and Arjun escapes to another city to save himself from the murderers.But Sikander manages to track him down and orders him to pay up the stolen sum of money plus interest or face Sikander's retiremnt plan.

Soon to get his hands on some millions, Arjun than sets up a special team who will help him execute the plan. Also involved in the team is Natasha (Koena Mitra), a female psychiatrist who ends up being conned by the group but eventually succeeds in seeking revenge.

Thrown into this mix is another character by the name of Jehangir Khan (Feroz Khan) who slows down Arjun's plans to get his hands on some big money.

Will Arjun get the money for the pay back? Or will he have to answer to accept Sikander's retirement plan? All is revealed in Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena.

Elaan is a Bollywood film, released in January 2005. ELAAN is an explosive tale of a nation on the edge, pushed to the margins by diabolic elements out to ignite global terror. More precisely, it is a mission film about five characters and their elaan against one man. Produced by Ganesh Jain and Ratan Jain and directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film stars Arjun Rampal, John Abraham, Rahul Khanna, Amisha Patel, Lara Dutta and Mithun Chakraborty.

Synopsis

Modern day secular India is held at ransom by international extortionist, Baba Sikiande (Mithun Chakraborty) and his brothers, Aftab and Sameer. They begin by demanding money from wealthy businessmen, and when their victims refuse to pay, they are killed. One of their victim's now being threatened is Kantilal Shah, who has adopted a mere canteen boy, Bunty, gave him his family name, Karan Shah (Rahul Khanna), and the responsibility of running the family business, much to the chagrin of his daughter, Anjali. Upon hearing that his father's life is endangered, Karan returns from America and convinces his dad not to give to the extortionist's demands, but instead provide that amount to the past victims' and their respective families, to which his father agrees. Then five days later, a day after his birthday, Kantilal is gunned down in the elevator along with four of his bodyguards. Anjali openly renounces Karan and asks him not to participate in her dad's funeral. A shocked and devastated Karan announces that he will apprehend and bring Baba Sikander (Mithun Chakraborty) to justice in India. However, when he finds out that the country that Baba is holed up in, Italy, does not have an extradition treaty with India, he plans to recruit some mercenaries to go with him and bring Baba back. The first man he chooses is former Police Inspector Arjun Srivastav (Arjun Rampal), who located and killed his wife's assailant on his own, and now lives as a single parent with his school-going daughter. And it is Arjun who recommends that the second man be Abhimanyu (John Abraham), who is currently lodged in Vashi Jail, and had been a former chauffeur of Baba himself. But before Karan (Rahul Khanna) can recruit Abhimanyu (John Abraham), he must spring him out of jail. The escapade takes place dramatically, and the trio, aided by Sonia(Lara Dutta), Abhimanyu's girlfriend, and Priya (Amisha Patel), a Press Reporter from "Aaj Tak", take over the arduous task of apprehending alive a fugitive whose whereabouts could be anywhere in Italy, France, Germany, or any other European country, and all of them know that their mission is surrounded by treachery, and that none of them may come back alive to tell their story.

Eklavya: The Royal Guard is a Bollywood film directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra which was released in India, the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Kingdom on 16 February 2007.

It stars Amitabh Bachchan,Saif Ali Khan, Sharmila Tagore, Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Raima Sen, Jackie Shroff, Jimmy Shergill and Boman Irani. The film marks Vidhu Vinod Chopra's return to directing after seven years.This movie was chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars to be considered for nomination in the Best Foreign Film category.

Reviews

Eklavya – The Royal Guard has already received accolades in Hollywood. The film got a standing ovation at the Billy Wilder Theater in UCLA, where it was recently screened as part of the India Splendour Film Festival. Robert L. Friedman, the former President of Columbia Pictures and AMC Theaters applauded it as one of the great foreign films to have graced Hollywood in recent years. He further added, “The caring and most talented direction by Vidhu Vinod Chopra is worthy of maximum praise and awards. Mr. Chopra has created a masterpiece via this film, thanks to his genuine insight and love for his film vehicle. ‘Eklavya’ is a movie that transcends all geographical boundaries – a movie for all people, everywhere, it represents the very best that India’s great filmmaking community has to offer.”

Lionel Wigram, Producer of the Harry Potter films, said “It’s a masterpiece and I can safely say that it stands an excellent chance of winning India a much awaited Oscar in the foreign film category." Jeffery Silver, Producer of the film 300, found it to be “a thriller that elevates to the level of art.”

Regrettfully, however, India may withdraw this Oscar entry into the foreign film category because of alleged bias in the entry selection process.

"Maybe there will be no film from India," Vinod Pandey, chairman of the Film Federation of India, said Monday, October 15, 2007. "Anything is possible. We can reaffirm our choice, send another or maybe India would retire this year."

The Bombay High Court requested the federation respond to a lawsuit challenging the selection of venerable Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "Eklavya: The Royal Guard."

Previously unknown director Bhavna Talwar filed a petition claiming a panelist on the 11-member selection jury had improperly helped promote the selection of "Eklavya" for Oscar consideration and that possibly two other panelists had close ties to Chopra. Talwar's own film "Dharm" was passed over for "Eklavya," a high energy suspense movie starring Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Previously two of Chopra's earlier films had been selected to represent India for consideration by the Academy Awards.

The Indian court will decide if the "Eklavya" film entry must be withdrawn from consideration.

Bollywood, the world's largest film industry based on the number of films it produces annually, has never had any of its movies win an Oscar for best foreign film.

Synopsis

Contemporary India. A majestic fort. A royal dynasty that no longer rules. A king without a kingdom. Yet Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan), their royal guard, lives in a time warp. He lives only to protect the fort, the dynasty, and the king. For nine generations Eklavya's family has protected Devigarh, a centuries old citadel in Rajasthan. His marksmanship is stuff of legends. His unflinching loyalty inspires ballads. Eklavya has spent his entire life serving the royals and closely guarding their secrets but now he's getting old and increasingly blind. Unable to cope with the suffocating customs of his land, the heir, Prince Harshwardhan (Saif Ali Khan), has stayed away in London. But the sudden demise of the queen, Rani Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore), forces the Prince back to the kingdom he had left behind.

The Prince's return brings a rush of joy into the moribund fort. His mentally challenged twin sister, Princess Nandini (Raima Sen) and his childhood love Rajjo (Vidya Balan) are delighted to see him. But the joy of reunion is short-lived.

There is unrest in the kingdom: Farmers are being stripped of their lands. The king, Rana Jaywardhan (Boman Irani), influenced by his brother, Rana Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff), supports the atrocities being forced upon the helpless peasants. The king receives a death threat over the phone. An irreverent police officer, Pannalal Chohar (Sanjay Dutt), is called in to investigate. But he might be too late. The fragile peace of the land is suddenly shattered by a barrage of bullets. And amidst the mayhem, the safely guarded secrets of the fort are unveiled.

What follows is a contemporary, edge-of-the-seat dramatic action thriller with a stellar ensemble cast - Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Jimmy Sheirgill, Raima Sen and Sharmila Tagore.
